NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR THE BULGARIAN SHEPHERD DOG - NOBODC

Breed History

The Bulgarian Shepherd Dog is a traditional Bulgarian breed, distributed throughout all regions of the country. Its formation is closely linked to the development of sheep breeding, which for centuries held a primary place in the economic and social life of the Bulgarian people.
From ancient times, Bulgarian shepherds needed a strong, brave, and resilient dog, capable of guarding and protecting the flocks from predators and encroachments. It was this necessity that led to the creation and establishment of the Bulgarian Shepherd Dog as a reliable guardian and faithful assistant to man.
For centuries, the breed developed in the natural conditions of the Bulgarian mountains, fields, and pastures. Selection was based primarily on working qualities – bravery, stable character, independence, intelligence, and unconditional devotion to its owner and the entrusted flock.
The Bulgarian Shepherd Dog is an integral part of the history and traditions of Bulgarian livestock breeding. Today, it represents not only a valuable working breed but also a living national heritage that deserves to be preserved and passed on to future generations.
